Welcome to Maskerpieces.com
Welcome to Maskerpieces, the web site of Carlyle Matthew.
Several years ago Carlyle Matthew began carving objects out of wood including his first, a miniature mask which was worn as a pendant. A similar mask had been worn by an individual in St. James, Port-Of-Spain, Trinidad and the young artist was so captivated by the image and idea of "mask" as statement of concern and culture, that he was determined to carve one as soon as he got home. After carving that initial piece the budding artist continued to carve several related objects during the ensuing years. This followed many previous years of other creative involvement.
To work at art over the past thirty plus years the artist has spent many weekends, days off, and time after regular days of work, in studios which at time have included, the back steps of houses, back yards, apartment verandas, laundry rooms and a previous but illustrious 12 ft. x 8 ft. converted storage shed. The limitation or freedom offered by each studio space didn't matter though because with each new exciting piece of art created there was the need to begin another… to the point where there’re always several pieces on the go.
Though creating art is very compelling and demanding, the artist also has great times with family, friends, and participates in sports and various social and cultural activities.
It is his hope that this web site, "maskerpieces.com" will provide you with a visual dimension of some of the works he has created over the past years, continue to create today, and also highlight some of the other things he does.
Please enjoy your visit to the maskerpieces gallery, and drop the artist a line with any comments or questions you may have.
